Screen and Scholar – Metropolis

Experience one of the most influential films in cinema history through Screen & Scholar, a program that pairs expert insight with landmark films. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) is a visionary silent film that helped define the science fiction genre. Set in a futuristic city divided between the working class and powerful city planners, the film follows a young man who falls in love with a working-class prophet foretelling the arrival of a mediator to unite the city. Celebrated for its groundbreaking visual effects, monumental design, and striking imagery, Metropolis continues to shape film and popular culture nearly a century after its release.

The evening begins with a presentation by Professor Brandon Bauer, Associate Professor of Art at St. Norbert College. Bauer will explore the film’s historical context, formal innovations, and socio-political themes, while tracing its lasting influence on popular culture. His talk provides audiences with deeper insight into why Metropolis remains a foundational work of cinema.
