The Riley School is delighted to host a beginning workshop in sean nós dance presented by Allison Duvall of McTeggart Irish Dancers! This workshop will teach basic introductory sean nós and set dancing.
1:00pm Beginning Sean Nós Dance (slower pace of instruction)
2:00pm Set Dancing (use sean nós steps and other skills in group dancing)
3:00pm Beginning/Intermediate Sean Nós Dance (faster pace of instruction)
The first hour is primarily for people with little to no dance experience; the second hour is some time for all workshop attendees to enjoy group set dancing together, and the third hour will move a little faster for people with some dance experience but little to no sean nós experience.
Sean nós dance is a rhythmic, improvisational, close-to-the-ground form of percussive dance with an integral connection to live Irish traditional music. The sean nós dancer’s main aim is to add percussion (foot percussion) to the music, battering out the rhythm, and the general ethos of the dance is to engage closely with that music and the other musicians playing it. Check out beloved whistle player Micho Russell dancing a few steps here (dancing starts around 1:04):

Her interests include sean nós and set dancing—vibrant, community-rooted forms of Irish dance—which she continues to study in Ireland with contemporary dancing masters. Dedicated to sharing the rich diversity of Irish dance, Allison loves working with students of all ages and abilities, and is delighted to bring sean nós and set dancing to the Riley School and Cincinnati area.
No wigs, fancy dresses, or special shoes are needed. Hard soled shoes (oxford-style dress shoes, cowboy boots) are better to dance in than sneakers but you can join this workshop in sneakers if that’s what you have. Tap shoes are okay but shoes without metal taps are preferred.
The fee for the first two hours, or the second two hours, is $30 and the fee for all three hours is $40. Pay in advance online (there is a small processing fee) or if you prefer to pay cash at the door, please reserve your spot by emailing

Plan to stick around for the céilí dance at the IHC that evening, also hosted by the Riley School
