Back by popular demand for the second year in a row! Spend a day at the Virginia Quilt Museum with VQM Executive Director Alicia Thomas and Quilt Historian Mea Clift and learn about the history of quilting and how to date a quilt. Have you ever wondered what styles of quilts were popular in the 19th century, or how scholars know how old a quilt is? If so, this Boot Camp is for you! This day-long event will feature 3 lectures that will each include looking at 5 to 8 different quilts, plus a chance to examine 10 more quilts at the end of the day. Limited to 15 participants this event is geared towards those who are curious about quilting and the stories quilts can tell us, no experience with historic quilts or quilt research necessary.

Coffee, bagels, a boxed lunch, drinks, and a gift bag will be provided. Please bring your own notebook and pencil for taking notes. 

Schedule for the day

9:00 - 9:30 am - Welcome, introductions, coffee and bagels
9:30 - 10:45 am - Whole Cloth to Kit Quilts: The Evolution of Quilting in the US - Alicia Thomas
10:45 - 11:00 am - Break
11:00 am - 12:30 pm - How old is that Quilt? - Mea Clift 
12:30 - 1:30 pm - Lunch and time to explore the museum’s current exhibit
1:30 - 3:00 pm - Textile Time Machine: The Basics of Fabric Dating - Mea Clift
3:00 - 3:15 pm - Break
3:15 - 5:00 pm - Bringing it All Together: 10 Quilts to examine in depth - Alicia & Mea

The Virginia Quilt Museum offers refunds for program and event registrations up until 2 weeks before the program. If you are unable to attend a program that you have paid for, you are welcome to transfer your registration to a friend or family member on your own. Please alert VQM to the change in registration by emailing info@vaquiltmuseum.org. If you would like to request a refund prior to the cutoff deadline please email info@vaquiltmuseum.org and include the name and date of the program you would like a refund for.
