Join us at the Dayton Society of Artists on Sunday, November 23rd, from 2–4 PM for an inspiring artist talk with Kate Santucci, whose newest work is currently featured in our Project Space. She’ll be sharing insights into her recent artist residency at Château d'Orquevaux in France and the evolution of her latest body of work.

This collection marks a significant shift in Kate’s practice. While she typically works in encaustic on wood, traveling abroad prompted her to rethink her materials and process. During the residency, she embraced unstretched canvas, paper, acrylic-based paints, charcoal, graphite, and wax pencils, allowing the constraints of travel to open new creative possibilities.

Though not a landscape artist in the traditional sense, Kate’s work from Orquevaux is deeply influenced by the colors, softness, and atmosphere of the French countryside. She considers these pieces “landscape adjacent”—sharing a border with reality while using the language of landscape to convey feeling rather than view.

The exhibition also explores the idea of works in a state of “almost completion.” Many canvases hang unstretched, reflecting the transition from residency to home. Pieced-canvas works include sculptural elements and can be displayed in various orientations, all tied together by themes of process, untangling, and transformation. Several small self-portraits—created as warmups and experiments—offer an intimate glimpse into her time abroad.
