EXPLORING COLOUR THEORIES

Throughout his life, the Expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner explored the effect of colours on thought, emotion and perception through his brushwork. From Goethe to Mary Gartside and Johannes Itten, many have written about the fascination of how colours interact with one another, sometimes in contradictory ways.

Selected colour theories enter into dialogue with Kirchner’s works during a guided tour.
