This program continues our 2025–26 season theme, In Defiance: Music of Exile, Resistance, and the Eternal Voice, illuminating how Baroque composers expressed resilience, individuality, and artistic conviction in eras marked by upheaval and constraint.
Bach, Leclair, Locatelli, Ysaÿe, and Élisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre each wrote music that asserted a distinct and uncompromising artistic voice. Their works often emerged from personal, political, or cultural struggles—whether navigating restrictive courts, challenging artistic norms, or carving out space in male-dominated musical spheres.
In this concert, their sonatas and suites reveal how music becomes a form of defiance: resisting silence, honoring personal truth, and giving voice to what endures. Through lyrical invention, technical brilliance, and bold emotional expression, these pieces stand as timeless examples of the human spirit’s determination to create, to persist, and to be heard.
Join us as we explore how the Baroque era’s most compelling composers shaped an eternal voice—one that resonates with our season’s call for resilience and artistic courage.
