Erased in History - Amplified in Her Story
Returning the spotlight to the points of origin,
Mari-Trees revives the music of the trailblazing women,
who pioneered the blues, conceived rock and pop,
and were then - promptly forgotten.
Who were they? Why do we not know them? And how did their music find its way into our collective subconscious?
Enraged by erasure and colonial continuity,
this lone-range-one-woman-warrior traverses the songs
on a mission to restore recognition.
Sharing songs, stories, troubles and triumphs,
Mari-Trees illuminates the legacy of these long-forgotten legends, from the Mississippi Delta - to the clubs of Harlem - to our clubs, pubs and petrol stations.
'Milked, shelved and swept aside – developing this show prompted me to pull back the rug on cultural myths to discover a treasure trove of cultural miss, near misses and many more Misses – missing in action’ – Mari-Trees.
Featuring Mari-Trees - exploring instruments, succinct storytelling and cultural commentary.
