Every day it seems there's another horrifying scandal about the gas industry in the Northern Territory, but we can’t afford to fall into despondency. That’s why we’re holding a very special public event to delve deeper into the regulatory crisis that led to Santos’ leak going unchallenged for nearly two decades.
You’re invited to join Australian Greens leader Senator Larissa Waters, Darwin Paediatrician Dr Louise Woodward, local tourism operator Rob Woods, ECNT Executive Director Dr Kirsty Howey and Greens Senator for Victoria Steph Hodgins-May, at the Railway Club at 6:30pm on Sunday 9 November for a frank and uplifting panel discussion sharing the inside story of how ECNT uncovered this scandal, what it says about our failing regulations, and what we can do about it.
From the failure of Federal and Territory regulators to make Santos fix the leak at the Darwin LNG plant, to the approval of Project Caymus jet fuel tanks despite persistent leaks, a major underreporting of toxic benzene emissions at Inpex's gas hub and major fracking breaches, it’s clear that our laws aren’t working to protect our communities and environment.
Given the scale of projects being proposed in the NT – including the Middle Arm gas hub, fracking in the Beetaloo basin, and offshore carbon dumping – it's critical that we act now to make sure our regulators are working in our best interest.
We’ve also invited local community environment groups fighting for the Territory’s nature and climate, who’ll be sharing ways that you can get involved to stand up for the Territory’s nature and climate.
Join us for an evening of hope and insightful conversations. We can’t wait to see you there!
