Australian South Sea Islanders are the descendants of people brought to Australia from more than 80 Pacific islands, particularly Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, through the labour trade from 1863. Their labour helped build Australia’s sugar and agricultural industries and contributed to the growth of Australia’s economy and national wealth.

Our history is also part of the Northern Territory. South Sea Islanders are documented in Darwin from at least 1906. Martínez and Vickers (2015) report that Darwin’s 1911 census population of 1,387 included “442 Chinese, 374 Europeans, 247 ‘full-blood Aboriginals,’ 77 Japanese, 52 Filipinos, 49 Timorese, 21 Malays, 7 Javanese, 4 Siamese, 5 Cingalese, 5 South Sea Islanders…”.
