The DRDC Atlantic Research Centre (ARC) engagement session will apprise Industry, Academia, and other relevant government departments on current and future research areas, projects and plans and to foster discussion on relevant innovations.  DRDC ARC is a federal research facility located in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and conducts research in Underwater Warfare (including the Arctic), Maritime Information Warfare and Naval Platforms. In this engagement session, DRDC ARC staff will provide an overview of DRDC, advice on partnering mechanisms and a summary of the following areas of research:

I. Naval Platforms

Speaker: Dr. Neil Pegg; Acting Section Head – Warship Performance

Overall research objectives in Naval Platforms will be discussed including current efforts in development of a Digital Twin prototype, submarine performance, and hull life assessment.

II. Underwater Surveillance for Continental Defense

Speaker: Dr. Michel Couillard; Section Head – Underwater Warfare (UWW)

The Canadian Arctic Underwater Sentinel Experimentation (CAUSE) Project will be presented including its objective to investigate and demonstrate sensor systems for wide-area underwater and under-ice surveillance in the Arctic. Key aspects include: Underwater sensing, long range underwater communications, arctic power and energy systems, and long-range autonomous vehicles.

III. The Command Reconnaissance Area Control and Coordination Environmental Network (CRACCEN) Project

Speaker: Dr. Vincent Myers; Section Head – Maritime Decision Support (MDS)

A discussion on the CRACCEN project and its ability to support the Underwater Warfare (UWW) team to plan and execute missions will be discussed. Key focus points include: Automated information collection, real-time environmental predictions and system modelling, Big Data techniques to improve underwater situational awareness, machine learning decision support aids, and human machine interface design to improve Ops Room collaboration.
