CPW's first-ever Behind the Gates bus tour experience. Discover water’s role in the production of food, from river to farm.
Step behind the scenes of one of New Zealand’s most significant pieces of water infrastructure on this guided Behind the Gates Tour of the Central Plains Water Limited (CPWL)scheme.
Travel by bus to the Rakaia River intake, gaining access to a site usually closed to the public, with guides sharing the story of the scheme along the way. The tour follows part of the 17-kilometer canal system and provides the opportunity to view the Labyrinth Weir.
Learn how the scheme operates, why it was built, and the role it plays in supporting farming, communities, and resilience across Canterbury.
This tour also includes time on a working farm, offering insight into how water moves from river to land to support food production, before wrapping up at the Hororata Hall for a sausage sizzle – a chance to refuel and ask questions.
This is a relaxed, informative experience designed for the wider community – whether you’re curious about how the scheme works, interested in local infrastructure, or simply keen to learn more about what happens beyond the farm gate.
Held on Sunday 15 March, this is a community event run by the Hororata Community Trust, in collaboration with CPWL and CPWT. With all profits reinvested back into the local community.
A unique opportunity to see, understand and connect with an essential part of the Selwyn landscape.
The bus tour runs from 12.30–5.30pm, starting and ending at the Hororata Hall. Tickets are tickets $20 per person. Tickets are limited. Buy online now. www.hororata.org.nz
