- **Event Description**: Tour the birthplace of Charles Ives: musical maverick, father of American classical music, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer.About this EventTours are Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, & Saturday at 10:30 am.Tours originate at the Ives Birthplace Museum located at 5 Mountainville Avenue, and take roughly 60-75 minutes. We ask that visitors do not knock on the doors on non-tour days as there is a tenant onsite."The music of Charles Ives, which on first acquaintance generally strikes listeners as willfully eccentric, grew from a 'long foreground' as Emerson said of Walt Whitman's equally eccentric Leaves of Grass. Ives well understood how insistently the past remained present in his work." --Jan Swafford, Charles Ives, A Life With Music.Take a guided tour of the birthplace of Danbury's Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Charles Edward Ives. Learn about the sights and sounds that influenced Ives, as well as the Danbury he would have known so well as a young man. The great impact of the Ives family on Danbury history is explored here as well.We are most grateful for our generous benefactor, Ives Bank, for making the re-opening of the Ives Birthplace possible! https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events1/banners/23d7b170-2d5e-11f1-a796-25373a183b85-rimg-w943-h740-dc8fc8f8-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/2417c7b0-2d5e-11f1-b4a4-e74a4bf63e65-rimg-w737-h740-dc474747-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events2/banners/2454f7c0-2d5e-11f1-b4a4-e74a4bf63e65-rimg-w782-h740-dcffffff-gmir.jpg https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events8/banners/24929d00-2d5e-11f1-b4a4-e74a4bf63e65-rimg-w987-h740-dc798a96-gmir.jpg

Situated in downtown Danbury, the museum preserves the John and Mary Rider House c.1785), the Dodd Hat Shop (c. 1790), the Marian Anderson Studio, the old King Street Schoolhouse, the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Charles Ives Birthplace. Huntington Hall, a modern exhibit building contains the museum offices and a research library. The Danbury Museum and Historical Society has evolved out of efforts to preserve endangered historic properties. One of the City's oldest structures, the Rider House on Main Street, would have been demolished in 1941 to make way for a gas station had it not been for the intervention of concerned citizens (including the Mary Wooster DAR Chapter). After raising money to purchase this property, these citizens founded the Danbury Historical and Arts Center.A merger, in 1947, between the Scott-Fanton Museum and the Danbury Historical and Arts Center, saw the creation of the Danbury Scott-Fanton Museum & Historical Society Inc. During the 1950s and 60s, the museum acquired the John Dodd Hat Shop, the Ward House, the Charles Ives birthplace, two one room schoolhouses and erected Huntington Hall, where many of its exhibits have been displayed. In 2004, the Museum was thrilled to add the Marian Anderson Studio to its collection. Famed contralto Marian Anderson made Danbury her home for more than 50 years. The studio was moved to the Main Street campus of the museum in 1999. Restoration of the studio was completed in early 2004. 2006 saw the merger of the Danbury Scott-Fanton Museum with the City of Danbury and a new entity was born on July 1, 2008...the Danbury Museum and Historical Society Authority."
