The Stokes County Arts Council presents its Winter 2026 show:
MOUNTAIN SONG
Directed by Kimberly Boles
Rehearsals: December 29th - February 5th
Shows: February 6th - 8th (3 - 4 performances total)
Synopsis:
The Mountain Song is the tale of a carpenter who climbs mountains and traverses rivers in order to attend his daughter’s wedding – without a clue as to where it’s taking place—an Appalachian story told through live music, puppetry, and an interesting cast of characters.

Rating: PG, Casting 14+
Roles to be Auditioned:
MOUNTAIN (Any gender) - A rather verbose, talking mountain, who narrates the tale. Kind, and full of folksy charm.
CARPENTER (M) - A father who can build nearly anything with his hands if he sets his mind to it. Thoughtful and determined.
YOUNG ABIGAIL (Any gender) - The carpenter’s daughter. She can’t speak with her voice. Playful and incredibly intelligent.
ABIGAIL (Any gender) - A fully grown version of Young Abigail. Highly Educated and extremely kind, and a good mother to her own daughter.
EMMIT JONES (Any gender) - A giant of a man who lives in the wilderness. Boyish, gregarious and always willing to help those in need.
FIRST SCOUNDREL (Any gender) - Hangs out with their pals at the edge of town, warning travelers.
SECOND SCOUNDREL (Any gender) - Part of the gang.
THIRD SCOUNDREL (Any gender) - Also, just part of the gang.
GOOSE (Any gender) - A talking goose who spends his days flying and contemplating the world. Affable and easy going.
COYOTE (Any gender) - A talking Coyote that knows how to shoot a gun. Extremely menacing but lazy.
COWBOY (Any gender) - The mayor of a “town” and the end of a river. Full of energy and finds creative ways to deal with his loneliness.
CALVIN (Any gender) - A hunter. Pious and rather stupid.
JEFFREY (Any gender) - Calvin’s friend and hunting partner. Possibly even less intelligent than Calvin.
FIRST MESSENGER (Any gender) - Eager and bad at holding his tongue.
SECOND MESSENGER (Any gender) - Strict and with a flare for the dramatic. Frustrated with their partner.

A NOTE ABOUT CASTING:
While some roles are marked M or F, all genders are considered for all roles. Actors and Musicians WILL be casted in multiple roles.
