Lincoln Theater is pleased to be part of FULL SPEED AHEAD – a Statewide Festival of Train Movies and Events! Join us for a special screening of “The Harvey Girls” including an introduction by Mark Griffin, film historian and biographer (A Hundred or More Hidden Things: The Life and Films of Vincente Minnelli).

This was MGM’s answer to Oklahoma!, a big Technicolor musical set in the Old West. Susan Bradley (Judy Garland) joins a group of spirited Midwestern “Harvey Girls” – waitresses who actually existed and served civility and meals along the Santa Fe Railway. She finds herself at odds with the rowdy saloon owner (John Hodiak) and his glamorous entertainers (led by Angela Lansbury). A crowd-pleasing romantic musical that’s elevated by Garland’s charm and the rousing numbers, including Academy Award winner, “On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe.”

Train fact: The sequence of the train travelling across the prairie is in fact footage taken from Warner Bros.’ Dodge City (1939).

(1946; 1 hour, 41 minutes)

Mark Griffin, film historian and biographer (A Hundred or More Hidden Things: The Life and Films of Vincente Minnelli)
“In addition to being a thoroughly enjoyable MGM musical, ‘The Harvey Girls’ also features one of the most memorable train sequences in cinema history,” says Griffin. “When we were deciding which movies to include in our ‘Full Speed Ahead’ festival, ‘The Harvey Girls’ went right to the top of the list as train travel is such an integral part of the story.”

“I’m looking forward to paying tribute to National Train Day by introducing this delightful four star classic,” says Griffin, whose most recent book, “All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson,” inspired a 2023 HBO Max documentary. “As the beautiful Lincoln Theater dates back to the same era as the film’s story, it’s really the perfect venue to house this celebration.”
