About the event

The Gleaners and I (NR)
Free Event
Tue Feb 24 at 6 PM

Lincoln Theater, Healthy Lincoln County, and the Lincoln County Gleaners are pleased to present a free screening of Agnes Varda's The Gleaners and I.

An 1867 painting by Jean-Francois Millet inspired septuagenarian documentarian Agnes Varda to cross the French countryside to videotape people who scavenge. Taking everything from surplus in the fields, to rubbish in trashcans, to oysters washed up after a storm, the "gleaners" range from those sadly in need to those hoping to recreate the community activity of centuries past, and still others who use whatever they find to cobble together a rough art. Highlighted by Varda's amusing narration.

(NR; 1 hour, 22 minutes - In French with English subtitles)

Learn more about the Lincoln County Gleaners:

Sarah Byrd is an AmeriCorps VISTA with Maine's Ending Hunger Corps, a program that was born from Maine's Roadmap to End Hunger by 2030. She is the Community Nourishment VISTA for Healthy Lincoln County, supporting and assisting Food Security staff, programs, and initiatives, and working to build bridges between Food Security programs and Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction programs. Sarah also manages the Lincoln County Gleaners program.

Starting in May 2025, Sarah has been getting to know local farms and farmers, food systems organizations, and other gleaners! From May 2025 to now (January 2026), she has helped plant, harvest, pick-up, deliver, process, and distribute nearly 11,000 pounds of produce with the Lincoln County Gleaners and their partners. "I am extremely excited to show this film," said Sarah, "because it is what introduced me to the term 'gleaning,' and I think it's powerful to see how it is as much an art as it is a strategy of feeding oneself and one's community."

Healthy Lincoln County is a Public Health non-profit in Damariscotta. Their mission is to provide support and resources to meet health needs, improve health outcomes, and strengthen community connections across Lincoln County. The two main areas of focus are Food Security and Substance Use Prevention and Harm Reduction.

Lincoln County Gleaners - The gleaning program has been around for a while but officially started in 2017. They work with local farmers with the goal of reducing food waste and providing free access to healthy, local produce around the community. They are one of many gleaning programs in the state of Maine - all working to alleviate hunger for our neighbors.

This is a free event with no tickets or reservations.

This film is presented in partnership with Healthy Lincoln County and the Lincoln County Gleaners
