The Legacy: GM Angel Cabales – Father of Escrima in America Angel Cabales (1917–1991) is widely recognized as the Father of Escrima in America. Born in the Philippines, he trained under Grandmaster Felicisimo Dizon. In 1966, he opened the first public Filipino martial arts school in the United States in Stockton, California—at a time when such arts were rarely taught outside Filipino communities. By teaching students of all backgrounds, he helped bring Escrima, Arnis, and Kali into the American mainstream and forever changed the martial arts landscape. Among the prominent martial artists who trained under Cabales was Dan Inosanto, whose global teaching and promotion of Filipino martial arts helped amplify Serrada Escrima worldwide.
