Garden Cafe and Reform Dallas cordially invite you to attend a reading and discussion with award-winning authors Michael Phillips and Betty Friauf about their new book,
Throughout the first half of the twentieth century, 32 states passed laws allowing involuntary sterilization on those deemed biologically โunfitโ: convicted criminals, the disabled, the poor, and people of color. Texas, despite a history of violent racism, was not one of them. Michael Phillips and Betsy Friauf explore this curious instance of the Lone Star Stateโs exceptionalism. The first history of the eugenics movement in Texas, it is a narrative that intersects with debates over race, immigration, abortion, the role of women in society, homosexuality, medical ethics, and the politics of disability in the stateโdebates resonating today in Texas and beyond.
Please join us on Sunday, July 27, 7p, at Garden Cafe in East Dallas, 5310 Junius St. Copies of ๐๐๐ ๐๐ช๐ง๐๐๐ฎ๐๐ฃ๐ ๐๐ฃ๐๐๐ will be available for purchase. Light bites and drinks will be available from Garden Cafe.
