Advanced Improv: Creating New Improv Formats

Every improv format began with a group of performers experimenting—discovering new ways to play, connect, and tell stories. In this seven-week course from Stomping Ground Comedy, you’ll do the same. Guided by your instructor, you’ll collaborate as an ensemble to explore structure, style, and storytelling, ultimately developing an original format that reflects your group’s unique voice.

The class will culminate in a run of live performances, allowing you to test, refine, and showcase your format on stage.

In this course, you’ll explore:

• Identifying the strengths and interests of your ensemble to inspire your form
• Using the building blocks of long form improv (openings, second beats, edits, and more)
• Incorporating the audience’s experience into the show
• Performing and refining your original format through live shows

About the Instructor
Hayden McGovern began teaching and coaching eight years ago at the Four Day Weekend Training Center and now specializes in advanced improv courses with Stomping Ground Comedy. He has taught a diverse range of students and coached independent teams throughout the DFW area. Hayden has performed at the Magnet Theater in New York (Del Close Marathon), The Hideout in Austin, and stages across the Metroplex. His experience spans various formats, including the JTS Brown, Deconstruction, Monoscene, Spokane, Two-Person, Narrative, and more. He currently performs with Stomping Ground Comedy’s VERSUS and independent teams Kaleidoscene and Handy.

Class Details

• 7-week in-person course
• Sundays, 6:00–8:30pm, beginning January 4
• Instructor: Hayden McGovern
• Prerequisite: Completion of Level Five Improv at Stomping Ground Comedy or equivalent training with approval from the Training Center Director
