Skill Level: Intermediate. Students should have safe gun handling and solid carbine fundamentals.
Overview
The Scoped Carbine / Precision Gas Gun / DMR Course is a two-day intensive built to bridge the gap between standard carbine work and precision rifle employment. Students will learn to run a semi-automatic rifle equipped with a magnified optic (LPVO or MPVO) as a true precision system, capable of confident engagements from 100 to 600 yards and beyond when conditions allow.
Modern precision carbine and gas-gun use is dominated by positional shooting, rapid optic problem-solving, and field-realistic constraints. You will spend very little time on flat-range prone work and a lot of time learning to stabilize and deliver hits from the positions you are most likely to use in hunting, competition, or duty contexts.
This course is ideal for hunters, competitors, patrol and designated marksmen, and serious civilian riflemen who want practical precision performance from a scoped gas gun.
Course Goals
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
Zero and confirm scoped carbines and gas guns efficiently and accurately.
Collect, document, and validate ballistic data for mid- to extended-range shooting.
Use reticle holds and or dialing effectively for speed and precision with magnified optics.
Engage targets from improvised and positional shooting platforms including standing, kneeling, seated, prone, barricades, and terrain supports.
Understand the DMR and extended-range carbine role and how to apply it.
Read wind and environment, then apply corrections to improve first-round hit probability.
Perform under time standards that reflect real-world and match-style demands.
Topics Covered
Rifle and Optic Setup, Zero, and Data
Gas-gun reliability and performance considerations
Optic mounting, leveling, torqueing, and zero procedures
LPVO and MPVO employment, magnification management, and reticle use
DOPE building, confirmation, and validation at distance
Ballistics and Applied Precision
External ballistics for semi-automatic rifles
Holds versus dialing, when to use each
Range estimation, subtensions, and corrections
Wind fundamentals and practical application
Positional and Field Shooting
Standing, kneeling, seated, and prone transitions
Improvised supports using logs, posts, packs, barricades, and terrain
Bipod and tripod integration
Stability, natural point of aim, recoil management
Timed positional engagement standards
Extended-Range Carbine and DMR Engagements
Multiple-distance target arrays
Rapid acquisition with magnified optics
Target discrimination and hit confirmation
Practical mid-range and extended-range stages
Required Equipment
Semi-automatic carbine or DMR-style gas gun (5.56, .223, .308, 6mm ARC, 6.5 Grendel, or similar)
Magnified optic (LPVO preferred, MPVO acceptable)
Sling, at least three magazines, and a method to carry them
Bipod (recommended)
Tripod (highly recommended, limited loaners may be available)
Rangefinder, binoculars, or spotting optic (recommended)
Rear support bag or shooting bag
Ballistic app and a notebook for data and wind logs
Eye and ear protection
Weather-appropriate clothing, hydration, and food for both days
Rifle rental is available if you do not wish to bring your own. See: CR2 Rifle Rental
Ammunition
Bring 200-300 rounds of reliable ammunition. Match-grade or consistent duty hunting loads are strongly recommended to build accurate data and get the most out of the class.
Student Notes
Students must arrive with safe gun handling and functional marksmanship fundamentals.
A confirmed 100-yard zero before arrival is helpful, but we will verify and true all rifles during class.
Expect significant reps from non-standard positions and under mild physical and time stress representative of field use.
Instructor
Chris Roberts is the lead instructor for this course and a senior trainer with CR2 Shooting Solutions, bringing more than 20 years of experience in military precision shooting, hunting, and competitive marksmanship. He served in the U.S. Army as a Senior Sniper Instructor, developing and mentoring precision riflemen across multiple operational and training environments.
Chris has also worked in the firearms industry as an Army contractor supporting sniper rifle development, including major programs such as the MK22 Precision Sniper Rifle and the M110 Semi-Automatic Sniper System. He helped develop the B5 Systems Precision Stock and currently serves as a consultant for Leupold and Stevens, giving him deep practical insight into rifle and optic performance at the highest level.
He remains actively involved in the precision community, competing in the NRL Hunter Series and Quantified Performance matches. He also provides professional media coverage for national-level competitions through his company Hide Site Creative. Students can expect a mission-focused approach built on repeatable fundamentals, hard positional reps, clean data, and measurable performance standards that translate directly to hunting, competition, and duty use.
What This Course Is (and Isn’t)
This course is:
A precision-focused scoped carbine and gas-gun program
Heavy on positional and improvised field shooting
Built around realistic mid- to extended-range performance
This course is not:
A CQB or room-clearing course
A bench-rest accuracy clinic
A beginner intro to rifle shooting
