In Maryland, 1 out of every 38 kids is diagnosed with Autism and 1 out of 6 are diagnosed with some type of developmental disability. It’s not a question of IF you’re going to have interactions with individuals with disabilities – it’s WHEN, and HOW FREQUENTLY. Through interactive exercises, scenarios and shared personal experiences, the presenter will define autism spectrum disorder and other intellectual and developmental disabilities and offer insight into the commonly effected areas (communication, sensory, social interactions and behaviors). This session will explore how characteristics and behaviors can easily be misinterpreted, while providing de-escalation strategies and suggestions for reasonable accommodations.
