Jólabókaflóð, which means Christmas Book Flood, is an Icelandic holiday tradition, where people give each other books on Christmas Eve.

The tradition began after WWII, when Iceland had gained its indepdence from Denmark in 1944. Paper was not rationed during the war, so books were something that weren't in short supply during that time. Iceland is the most book-reading country in the world - a 2013 study found that half the population reads at least 8 books a year!

Every year since 1944, the book trade in Iceland has published a catalog that is sent to every household in mid-November, and people order books out of that to give to friends and family for Christmas.

On December 24th books are swapped and everyone settles in for the night to read their books, often accompanied by delicious treats like hot cocoa, Icelandic chocolates, or a non-alcoholic drink called jólabland.

Iceland has the most writers per capita, as well as the most books published per capita in the world. Given that their language isn't commonly learned by foreigners, like English, German, French, Spanish etc... it's impressive that they publish books for themselves that most others aren't able to read! Book reading has been referred to as a 'national sport' there. Having visted the country twice and loving reading books - it would be a great place to live and read!

Jólabókaflóð is a tradition built around sharing stories and slowing down, which sounds perfect!

Who doesn’t want an excuse to trade stories and chocolate?
