These auditions are by appointment only. To sign up, please email Denise Gilks at dgilks.embassytheatre@gmail.com for an audition time. If you are unavailable on this date and would still like to audition, please reach out to work out something with the director. 
*Please note - only actors 18+ may audition for this production - if you have questions about this, please contact Denise directly. 

WHAT TO PREPARE:
Please make sure to wear something comfortable, as there will be a dance number as part of your audition! There will be a morning and afternoon group for the dancing.

You will then have a 15 minute private slot for singing and reading. The Music Director would like to hear something from the show. Tracks will be provided. Afterwards, you will be reading sides with the Director.

SYNOPSIS:
Daring, provocative and exuberantly entertaining, Cabaret explores the dark and heady life of Bohemian Berlin as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich.

In a Berlin nightclub, as the 1920s draw to a close, a garish Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and assures them they will forget all their troubles at the Cabaret. With the Emcee’s bawdy songs as wry commentary, Cabaret explores the dark, heady and tumultuous life of Berlin’s natives and expatriates as Germany slowly yields to the emerging Third Reich. Cliff, a young American writer newly arrived in Berlin, is immediately taken with English singer Sally Bowles. Meanwhile, Fräulein Schneider, proprietor of Cliff and Sally’s boarding house, tentatively begins a romance with Herr Schultz, a mild-mannered fruit seller who happens to be Jewish. Musical numbers include “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don't Tell Mama” and “Two Ladies.”

[DISCLAIMER: Cabaret contains mature, intense themes suitable for adult audiences, including anti-Semitism, Nazism/Holocaust imagery, abortion, sexual content, and domestic violence. The musical, set in pre-WWII Berlin, also features depictions of drug use, smoking, heavy drinking, and strong language.]

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:

• Master of Ceremonies – Emcee (Range: C3-G4) The host at the Kit Kat Club. A magnetic and hypnotizing performer who can equally charm you and terrify you. Sexually fluid ringleader who runs the show at the Kit Kat Klub. Strong physicality. Tenor.
• Sally Bowles (Range: E3-C5) A British Cabaret performer and the headliner at Berlin's Kit Kat Club. Sally is eccentric, compelling, vivacious, and outrageous - a true bohemian with an artist’s soul. Underneath the surface she is far more complicated than she appears. Soprano with a strong belt.
• Clifford Bradshaw (Range: C#3-E4) Male, mid 20s-early 30s. An American novelist and English teacher traveling to Berlin for inspiration. A closeted bisexual man exploring his sexuality by escaping to Europe. Strong wit, charisma, presence, and depth. Baritone.
• Fräulein Schneider (Range: Eb3-B4) Female, early 50s-early 70s. A landlady who rents rooms in her large flat. She is alone and resigned to her place in life, but secretly longs for more. She is wise and worn but with real sparkle and humor. A survivor and a cynic. Loving Herr Schultz and choosing to risk getting engaged could cost her everything. Alto with strong belt.
• Herr Schultz (Range: C3-G4) Male, early 50s-early 70s. One of Fraulein Schneider’s roomers. A Jewish fruit shop owner who falls in love with Fraulein Schneider. He is warm, kind, endearing, and heartbreakingly “naïve”. There is a survivor here too. High baritone. 
• Fräulein Kost (Range: F#3-Eb5) Female, early 30s-late 40s. Fraulein Kost is a survivor. A sex worker and lodger in Fraulein Schneider's boarding house, she makes things work. Quick witted and sharp tongued, the winning side is her side and she’s ready to swap alliances for whatever grass is the greener. Mezzo-soprano with strong belt.
• Ernst Ludwig (Range: D3-F#4) Male, late 20s-mid 30s. Life and soul, dependable yet enigmatic, he takes English lessons from Cliff. He’s Cliff’s first ‘true’ friend upon arrival to Berlin. Everyone knows him, everyone loves him. He appears witty, charming, and warm but, ultimately, a Nazi. Baritone.

The ensemble will fill the Kit Kat “Girls” and Kit Kat “Boys.” Strong singer/dancers comfortable with audience interaction and intimate/suggestive movement. Note that non-speaking roles still sing. The Kit Kat ensemble will double roles as necessary.

All roles are available and flexible in casting. All performers must be 18+ as of July 1, 2026. The age ranges listed are suggestions. We will consider people outside of these age ranges if they can portray the required ages well.
