In Seven Devils, their fourth full-length album, Kitchen Dwellers embark on a musical odyssey inspired by Dante’s Inferno—grappling with sin, struggle, and redemption through a folk-infused bluegrass sound spiked with psychedelia and rock energy. Across this conceptual arc, the Montana quartet—Shawn Swain (mandolin), Torrin Daniels (banjo), Joe Funk (upright bass), and Max Davies (acoustic guitar)—pair ambitious storytelling with their most anthemic songwriting to date.
Working with producer Glenn Brown in a Michigan studio packed with vintage recording gear, the band leaned into the intensity of close collaboration. The result is an ever-evolving record that mirrors Dante’s descent, beginning with the driving single “Seven Devils (Limbo)” and closing with a sweeping ten-minute reprise. Along the way, the Dwellers confront loss in “The Crow and the Raven (III),” addiction in “Pendulum,” America’s ongoing gun violence in “Here We Go (VI)” featuring Lindsay Lou, and surrender and transcendence in the cathartic “Unwind (Paradiso).”
Already veterans of Red Rocks, Telluride Bluegrass, and WinterWonderGrass, Kitchen Dwellers push further with Seven Devils, blending sharp lyricism, fearless musicianship, and an unflinching look at the human condition. As Torrin puts it: “The record is a trip inward. We’re only truly happy when happiness comes from within. That’s the message.”
