Come visit Nathanael Greene Homestead to explore the arms, armor and daily life of Roman soldiers with Legion III Cyrenaica, a living history group in New England, at their annual encampment display at the Homestead.

What do the Romans have to do with American history?  Come explore this with us, and discover why people like Nathanael Greene and George Washington were keen on studying the Classical world and why it related to the fight for American Independence.

The group researches and re-constructs this historical Legion while it was based in Egypt in the 1st century CE, acting primarily as a military police guarding trade & commerce routes and Roman infrastructure in Egypt, as well as when the Legion moved to establish a new province in Syria in the 3rd-5th centuries.  Gear and clothing used by the group is based on archaeological artifacts, and members keep up on the latest academic research.   

Visitors can expect to try on replicas of arms and armor, pose for photos, try their hand at writing with Roman writing materials, as well as explore the historical grounds and the 18th century house.   Visitors can engage with living historians with a range of interests and knowledge relating to the ancient world.

The Legion has also be seen at the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester MA, at various historical timeline events throughout New England, has provided interactive displays with the Joukowsky Institute of the Ancient World at Brown University, the American Heritage Museum in MA, and other venues and activities.   The group is open to new prospective members 17 years old and up.
