- **Event Description**: Join us for a deep dive into the art and history of one of London's oldest royal landmarks.About this EventBefore a fire in 1512, medieval Westminster Palace was the seat of the English monarchy, presenting the grandest hall, the intensely painted king’s bedchamber and a glittering chapel; and in the adjacent royal abbey church the golden coronation seat and ultimately the nation’s mausoleum. Today we still speak of the ‘Palace of Westminster’ and it strictly retains its status as a palace. But what was it like? Within and beneath the Victorian Houses of Parliament are significant remains of the old palace that, along with the observations and recording of antiquarians over the centuries, enable a reconstruction of royal life, art and meaning at the heart of the nation. This richly illustrated series of talks leads us back into royal Westminster’s vanished chambers.Lecture1. Edward the Confessor to Henry III (c.1040-1272)Lecture 2. Edward I to Henry VIII (1272-1547)Lecture 3. Edward IV to present (1547-) https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events4/banners/ec586770-a851-11f1-a4a1-eb59356bc08b-rimg-w762-h740-dc282828-gmir.jpg Dr Jonathan Foyle is a career communicator, best known for presenting TV series such as BBC2's Broadcast Award-winning 15-part 'Climbing Great Buildings', as well as contributing to Channel 4's 'Time Team' and Channel 5's 'Secrets of the Royal Palaces'. His former roles have encompassed Curator at Hampton Court and Chief Executive of World Monuments Fund Britain, writer for the FT Weekend, and he is now a lecturer at the University of Bath. Jonathan has authored seven volumes on great cathedrals and castles and has spoken across the world about discoveries in British arts. The offered Arts Society talks offer fresh and original analyses of personal fascinations in architecture and the arts and crafts, especially their all-important symbolism, through which we can better understand what their makers were trying to communicate- to anyone who holds the keys to deciphering. The aim of these talks is to share those keys, in friendship and with a sense of humour. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events1/banners/ec8fa410-a851-11f1-a4a1-eb59356bc08b-rimg-w740-h740-dc080828-gmir.jpg Agenda🕑: 10:45 AM - 03:30 PMWestminster Palace & Abbey: A Thousand Years of Royal History and ArtHost: Dr. Jonathan Foyle🕑: 10:30 AM - 10:45 AMRegistration🕑: 10:45 AM - 11:45 AMLecture 1: Edward the Confessor to Henry III (c.1040-1272)🕑: 11:45 AM - 12:15 PMCoffee Break🕑: 12:15 PM - 01:15 PMLecture 2: Edward I to Henry VIII (1272-1547)🕑: 01:15 PM - 02:15 PMLunch Break🕑: 02:15 PM - 03:15 PMLecture 3: Edward IV to present (1547-) 🕑: 03:15 PM - 03:30 PMQuestions
