Our new convergent program, 'because • not despite', opens on Saturday, June 14, at 1pm.

You are invited to join us for the free opening event!

Following the artist talks, there will be time to meet some of the artists, view their work, visit with community, and enjoy some anniversary celebration cake!

This event will be ASL facilitated. Recordings on portable headsets describe the installations and the text components.

BECAUSE • NOT DESPITE

Featuring Persimmon Blackbridge, Taryn Goodwin, and L'Arche Comox Valley artists, 'because • not despite' will run from June 14 - September 6 at CVAG. 

'because • not despite' disrupts the historical perceptions of disability as a failing and problem that requires curing, rehabilitation, or charity. Through a convergent program of exhibition, video screening, community engagement, and research, the creative passion and artistic excellence of professional and emerging artists who identify as neuro-divergent is held up. Each artist contributes in meaningful ways — not in spite of their differences, but because of them. The projects presented contribute to de-stigmatizing prevailing attitudes towards ability and raises awareness about the many ways in which difference enhances and expands collective perception and understanding of our world.

PUBLIC HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

We ask that visitors choose not to visit if they are experiencing symptoms of colds and flus. Hand sanitation dispensers are available at CVAG. Wearing a mask is at the discretion of the visitor.
