Soon enough I was trying and mostly failing to outwit stocked trout with a fly. Things really got serious after I joined TT5R and Kirk Klingensmith introduced me to sight fishing for carp in the Chemung river. Since then, I've jumped on every opportunity to fish somewhere new for a species I didn't know much about. Those opportunities expanded in 2017 when I got hired at RIO Products in Idaho Falls, ID where I still work as the Director of Product Development.

Over 8 years in the fly fishing industry I've learned what I enjoy most about fly fishing travel, and what I don't, and I've concluded that I can never get enough DIY bonefishing. I actually prefer this style of trip over staying at a lodge and will explain why. I'll cover how I plan a trip, the gear I take, some places I like to go, and some tips for finding and catching fish on the flats without the help of a guide. Hopefully this presentation inspires you to ditch winter weather for a week and take your fly rod for a walk on a remote, tropical ocean flat somewhere."
