Singing for essential services in Malawi – the White Horse Gospel Choir host a very special fundraising concert in aid of The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust Clinic on Friday 6th June 2025 at 7pm in Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin, Ballincollig.
With songs like Ahunya, Africa, Siyahamba and Labi Siffre’s So Strong as regular favourites in their set, as Gospel choirs go, The White Horse Gospel Choir have a deep affinity with African songs and culture. Thus, when they were approached by The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust Clinic for fundraising assistance, specifically to aid the completion of a newly added maternity ward at the Cape Maclear clinic in Malawi – this choir knew they wanted to support!
The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust Clinic was founded by Mags Riordan in 2004, following the tragic death of her son, Billy, in Malawi. Moved into action, having witnessed the appalling lack of basic health facilities in the area of Cape Maclear, Mags Riordan set up an out-patient medical clinic to provide basic healthcare support to the local community of 16,000 inhabitants. Since that time, the clinic has grown, providing essential medical services to the community, along with training for the local people, to assist with the running of the clinic. In recent years, an in-patient building was added to the clinic, which enabled families, who had to travel long distances, to have somewhere to stay when seeking medical care. This new building also facilitates in-patient care for those in need of urgent medical treatment.
A non-profit charity, The Billy Riordan Memorial Trust Clinic relies fully on donations and the altruism of its medical volunteers, who give their time freely for several months at a go, to support the ongoing care needs of this community.
The most recent addition to the clinic has been the creation of a maternity ward, the third building recently added to the existing clinic. This maternity ward, while greatly needed to support mother and infant care pre and post-partum, has yet to be fully equipped. It is hoped that this fundraiser will help supply vital equipment to ensure that essential maternity services can be provided swiftly.
Following a massively successful fundraising concert for Balance Summer Camp back at the start of April, the choir are all too aware of the importance of events such as these in raising vital funds for charities that rely solely on donations and the kindness of others. Having raised a whopping €9.5K for Balance Summer Camp, the White Horse Gospel Choir hope to raise vital funds and the roof on Friday 6th June when they bring another exciting concert performance to the halla mór in Gaelscoil Uí Ríordáin, who have kindly offered their space for this wonderful cause.
Very special guests on the night will be the joyful and vivacious African Queens, along with drumming sensation, Levente Magyar, who will bring the sweet sounds of African music to this special occasion.
