GOOD MORNING STAR CHILD is the adventurous life story of Jamaican/American artist Tina Spiro, a unique journey that traverses the New York art scene of the 60's, Jamaica with its bittersweet legacy, Miami as a global art capital, and a return to home base in the Caribbean. This fascinating narrative originates in the mists of history with her noble European ancestors; explores her childhood art epiphany and early training as a classical painter; her apprenticeship with American sculptor David Smith; her emergence as a New York artist and close friend of Andy Warhol; a fifty-year sojourn in Jamaica absorbing the African roots, rhythms and spiritual core of a vibrant island nation; the creation of The Shekkinah Scrolls, a prophetic project based on the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Kabbalah; her extensive art research in Cuban and Caribbean Art; a decade spent in Miami as an art activist, artist and educator; and her return to the magical countryside of Jamaica, the final chapter of an artist seeking environmental, humanitarian and spiritual healing. The story culminates soon after the Covid global pandemic, with a vison of the future that proposes creative climate solutions, where the people and the planet work together for the preservation of all life forms, including ourselves.
Tina Spiro, B.Sc., MFA, is a Jamaican-American artist whose career spans five decades, exhibiting in museums, galleries, and biennials internationally. Her artwork combines technical and conceptual approaches, including classical painting, minimalist sculpture, and pop elements recalling her friend Andy Warhol. In 1969 she moved to Jamaica with her husband, urban planner Eran Spiro. She also spent a decade in Miami, where she had a distinguished career as an artist and art historian specializing in Caribbean art, a curator of large-scale exhibitions (including Omniart I, II, and III for the City of Miami for Art Basel), and an educator in studio art. In 2002, Tina established the MiART Foundation in Miami, creating large-scale art events and public projects dedicated to environmental and humanitarian issues, with a particular focus on climate solutions and renewal of the human spirit. She also serves as a Director on the Board of Management of the National Gallery of Jamaica.
