Manzi Hall will proudly host the Paul Gilmore Memorial Tribute Jam on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, uniting musicians, friends, and fans to celebrate the life and legacy of Paul Gilmore—a cherished Long Island bassist, craftsman, and friend whose passing in November 2025, around Thanksgiving, sent shockwaves through the local music community.

Paul Gilmore was a true Long Island music legend who played with many bands. Most notably, Paul was the house bassist for Jim Kolman’s long-running jam at The Brick House and also played with The Hitman Blues Band, alongside Russell “Hitman” Alexander. Paul was far more than a sideman—he was family. His deep groove, musical intuition, and unwavering loyalty made him an irreplaceable part of the many bands he performed with across the region.

Beyond his musicianship, Paul was a gifted luthier (instrument builder), a skilled car mechanic, and a relentlessly creative soul. Known for his quick wit, genuine kindness, and huge heart, Paul left a lasting impression on everyone he encountered—onstage and off.

Following his passing, tributes poured in across Facebook and Instagram, with musicians and friends sharing stories, photos, and memories that painted a picture of a man who gave endlessly to his community. That collective love now comes together at Manzi Hall, where many of the musicians who played with Paul are expected to take part in an open jam to honor his life the most fitting way possible—through music.

Russell “Hitman” Alexander, bandleader of The Hitman Blues Band, reflected on Paul’s impact:

The tribute jam is being hosted and organized by Susan Green of The Green Project, whose band is leading the effort to bring this night together.

“Paul was one of those rare people who made everyone better just by being around,” said Susan Green. “His talent was undeniable, but it was his humor, generosity, and love for music and people that defined him. This night is about honoring Paul the way he lived—surrounded by friends, great music, and love.”

Answering the call on short notice to help produce the event was Ray Bettinelli, Event Manager at Manzi Hall and former owner of the iconic Ray’s Rhythm Room, a venue that hosted many of the same musicians now reuniting in Paul’s honor.

“When Sue called, I didn’t think twice,” said Ray Bettinelli. “Paul and so many of these players go way back with me. I hosted many of them for years at Ray’s Rhythm Room, and bringing them together again—this time to honor this incredible musician—hits close to home.”
