Since Trump’s vowing to “take back” the Canal, the country on the Isthmus which otherwise seems rather peripheral has moved into the spotlight. Indeed, the Canal has an obvious geopolitical and also symbolic function which helps to read the current US foreign policy. But Panama is in many other aspects a place which concentrates particular phenomena which are very telling for the historically grown relationship between the US and Latin America. Georg Wink, associate professor at the University of Copenhagen and coordinator of the Iberian and Latin-American Studies Forum, will introduce the fascinating case of Panama in both a historical and current perspective.
