19:30 =Starci na chmelu (Green Gold), 1964, Czechoslovakia, dir:Ladislav Rychman, 88 min, Czech with english subtitles// On the hop brigade, the charming student Hanka becomes the center of attention of the boastful premier Honza and the honest and principled, albeit somewhat more peculiar Filip. However, the romance in the attic of the school, where the students are accommodated, ends with an insensitive intervention by pedagogical supervision. A fresh, optimistic, seventeen-year-old Czech film. And today also an immortal film legend!
Released in 1964, Starci na chmelu is the first and perhaps most famous Czechoslovak film musical. The film’s songs were written by Vratislav Blažek and were recorded with some of the country’s most popular singers at the time, including Karel Gott, Josef Zíma, Jana Petrů and Karel Štědrý. With a story that transcends time.
Starci na chmelu (GREEN GOLD) seems to anticipate 4 years the wrongful intrusion of the soviet tanks. The films ends better than "West Side Story" and even better than the sad czechoslovakian story. The scenes of the hops harvest to make the famous czech beer, the sky ever blue and all the conflict and debate that emerge in the czech society and inside of each member of the school, could have found an answer, flowering a little late in the so called czech spring.
Starci na chmelu was one of the country’s commercially most successful movies and initiated a period which would produce many more film musicals.
