‣ Kirtan is a simple yet powerful practice of chanting ancient Sanskrit mantras in a call and response style, accompanied by music. It has been used for thousands of years as a way to calm the mind, steady the nervous system, and reconnect with
a deeper sense of meaning. Unlike meditation techniques that require silence or intense concentration, Kirtan is accessible to everyone, no experience, belief system, or musical skill is required.
‣ For Australian veterans, Kirtan can offer a supportive space to release stress, anxiety, and emotional weight carried from service. The rhythmic repetition of mantra helps regulate breathing, reduce mental chatter, and activate the body’s natural relaxation response.
‣ Chanting together also fosters connection and
mateship, countering isolation and encouraging a sense of belonging.
‣ Many participants report improved sleep, reduced tension, and a renewed feeling of purpose. At its core, Kirtan is a grounding practice that supports resilience, wellbeing, and inner strength.
‣ This event is facilitated by the local Kirtan group Kirtananda, whose members include VETERAN Boi Crompton. Boi brings over 30 years of experience in the music industry and has been practicing kirtan for the past six years, after being
introduced to the practice at a local event on the Sunshine Coast.
‣ Deeply impacted by the experience, he went on to help form KIRTANANDA with other group members eSKae van Eck and Caroline Trengove shortly thereafter. The group together forms a dedicated trio committed to sharing the grounding and uplifting practice of kirtan with the wider community.
‣ Since its formation, KIRTANANDA has hosted regular kirtans at the Yandina–Eumundi RSL Sub Branch, creating an inclusive and supportive space for connection and wellbeing.
‣ The group also performs across the Sunshine Coast, facilitating kirtan at festivals and community gatherings, including appearances at major events such as this year’s Woodford Folk Festival 💫
