Explore memory, place, and storytelling in this creative writing workshop set in the Pulborough Brooks Wetlands Reserve. Using water as both subject and metaphor, the session combines walking, close observation, and guided writing exercises to deepen attention to the natural world and to lived experience.

Participants will be encouraged to attune to the rhythms of water and to consider how landscapes hold memory, shape identity, and invite narrative. Through prompts, short readings, and reflective writing, the workshop explores wetlands as sites of remembrance, transformation, and imagination.

Free entry and free light refreshments. Please bring a packed lunch

You can get there by car. Paid parking on site.
Or from Brighton on our free minibus. Pick up at 10:30am from the back of Brighton Station (please select minibus in the ticket options ). The minibus will be leaving the venue at 3:30pm to return to Brighton.

About the artist
Saira Niazi is a guide and writer whose multidisciplinary practice combines walking, photography and writing, with a focus on place and landscape. She was shortlisted for the Art Foundation Futures Award for Place Writing in 2023. Her book of personal essays, On Belonging: Reflections of a Renegade Guide (2020), explores movement and belonging, and led to a writer-in-residence role at Southside House.

She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths College and recently completed her first national writing commission as part of Beach of Dreams. Her work has been longlisted for the Queen Mary Wasafiri New Writing Prize. Saira has designed and facilitated creative workshops for Tate, the London Museum, South Downs National Park and Wimbledon Book Festival. She is currently working on a fiction project, Gypsy Bridge, developed during a residency at Metal, Southend, and inspired by the estuary.

About the Downs to the Sea Partnership
Downs to the Sea brings together a partnership comprising the South Downs National Park Trust, South Downs National Park Authority, Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, Western Sussex Rivers Trust (formerly known as Arun and Rother Rivers Trust), Brighton and Hove City Council, and Writing Our Legacy.

The partnership focuses on the two following strands: Water in the landscape, focused on restoring and improving vital wetlands, ponds and rivers, and increasing the landscape’s resilience to climate change and other threats;
Water in people’s lives, focused on connecting people to natural heritage and the water in their lives, to benefit their health and wellbeing, to develop skills and knowledge, and to help protect precious freshwater resources that are vital to our communities.
