- **Event Name**: March Featured Poet: Annie Woodford
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 02 Mar, 2026 at 07:00 pm – Mon, 02 Mar, 2026 at 08:30 pm
- **Event Description**: March's Sawmill Poetry comes in like a lion! This month, we feature the wonderful poet Annie Woodford, who will read from her new collection. Peasant (Pulley Press) takes its title from a poem by Nikki Giovanni about her mother’s meatloaf recipe. Giovanni writes, “[S]ince meatloaf is peasant food it must be mixed with your hands. Grandmother taught us that.” These poems aspire to that same richness, that plainness, that matrilineal power reverberating down through the generations, offering continued sustenance and not just survival, but celebration.

Annie Woodford is the author of Peasant (Pulley Press, 2025), Where You Come from Is Gone (Mercer University Press, 2022), recipient of the 2022 Weatherford Award for Appalachian Poetry, and Bootleg (Groundhog Poetry Press, 2019). Her micro-chapbook, When God Was a Child, was published by Bull City Press in 2023. She has been the recipient of the Jean Ritchie Fellowship. Most recently, she was part of the poetry anthology Had I a Dove: Appalachian Poets on the Helene Flood, proceeds from which go to support Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

Woodford's reading will be followed by an open mic. Poetry, spoken word, dramatic monologue, short prose, and songs are all welcome. Plenty is located at 41 W. Broad St. in Cookeville. Arrive by 6:45 to sign up to perform.
