Such movies usually inspire me to go searching for the real story. I wonder why the writers didn’t stick with the facts and just tell the real story. 

Truth is always more interesting because it really happened. I guess there are no writer royalties for simply telling the truth.

The “nativity scene”, while inspired by true events, contains several inaccuracies. 

Do you want the fictionalized, plasticized, hokey, phony baloney, nativity story, or the flesh and blood, honest to God real deal, the way it really happened?

Yes, there were some rough shepherds that showed up and some foreign born eastern intellectuals arrived much later. There was even an extraterrestrial being (an angel) that delivered an amazing announcement.
