Explore the dramatic fells of Wasdale on this rewarding circuit, taking in Kirk Fell and Pillar. This walk offers steep ridges, rugged summits, and some of the most iconic views in the western Lake District, including Wast Water, England’s deepest lake.
Starting from the small settlement of Wasdale Head, the route ascends steeply toward Kirk Fell (802 m), a broad summit providing spectacular vistas over Wast Water and the surrounding fells. The climb introduces walkers to the wild and remote landscapes of the Western Fells, with the summit offering a perfect vantage point for panoramic photography.
From Kirk Fell, the ridge leads south-west toward Pillar (892 m), one of the highest and most striking peaks in the area. The route passes over rocky slopes and exposed ridges, offering dramatic views of Great Gable, Scoat Fell, and the surrounding Western Lakes. The summit of Pillar rewards walkers with sweeping panoramas and a sense of achievement amid rugged fell scenery.
The descent follows a quieter route back toward Wasdale Head, passing open fell and valley paths, completing a circuit that combines challenging climbs with unforgettable Lake District landscapes.
