"description": "About ClearWater Artist Studios:\n\n\nClearWater Artist Studios is a community development project and evolving art center initiated by the City of Concord’s Planning and Neighborhood Development Department; and located in the historic Gibson Village residential area, in the former ‘mill town’ for the nearby Gibson Mill— itself now repurposed as home to an antiques mall, events center, two NEW BREWERIES as of early 2016, and other several businesses. We are just 5 minutes from the quaint and beautiful Historic Downtown area of the City of Concord, which is full of independent merchants and great restaurants, as well as the \nCabarrus Arts Council\n, seated in the historic and lovely \noriginal \nCounty Courthouse building.\n\n\nCurrently ClearWater Artist Studios houses 12 studios with 16 individual working visual artists, as well as the Southern Piedmont Woodturner’s Association, a non-profit club with roughly 70 members making high-quality turned-wood vessels and artworks, who work with youth teaching the art of wood-turning and bringing in national experts monthly for demonstrations (\nwww.spwoodturners.org\n).\n\n\nWe have a large Main Gallery in the center of the main, or 'Operations' Building (from the days of serving as admin offices for the Board of Light & Water); in 2016 we began a Guest Artist Exhibitions series and have rotating art exhibits every 1-2 months; available to view weekly.  Weekly openhours are Wed-Fri, Noon - 5pm and every 2nd Saturday for Open Studios 10am-4pm; or by appointment, at other times.  \n\n\nThe Gallery is a great event space and can be rented out for your event, at reasonable rates!  Contact the Manager for information at 704-784-9535 and/or clearwatermgr@gmail.com.  We encourage non-proftis and other businesses and organizations in our area to consider holding meetings in our space-- surround your group with art and creative thinking will ensue!  Kitchen, spacious restrooms and tables/chairs are included.\n\n\nClearWater is envisioned as a gathering point and resource for the neighborhood, for Concord, and for the greater community of artists and arts lovers.  Its great strength is anticipated to be the unusual intersection of high-quality fine art, community involvement, events and resources, and multi-disciplinary ‘conversations’ and collaborations that arise from these intersections.  The leasing artists at ClearWater form the ClearWater Artists' Coalition, which in 2016 voted to open its membership to non-leasing artists and members of the community at half regular dues, or $25 per year.\n\n\nHistory:\n\n\nThe buildings at 223 Crowell Drive, NW have served the \nCity of Concord\n for nearly a century. Originally home to the City Water Works in the 1920s, the site later housed the Board of Light and Water. Eventually, the buildings became the City's Electric Operations facility. By the late 1990s, all of the buildings were sitting vacant.\n \n\n\nAs a strategy to spur community development within Gibson Village, the City made plans to redevelop the site and offer studios to artists at affordable rates. The first framed-in studios were offered for lease in 2011. With creative energy and activity in new supply within the community, the studios have become a catalyst for neighborhood revitalization. \n\n\nIn late 2013 the City hired ClearWater’s first dedicated Arts Manager, Sarah Gay, at half-time to direct the growth and programming of the facility and Artist’s Coalition. She was made full-time July 1, 2016.\n\n\nMore renovations (helped by allocation of Housing and Urban Development funds from the federal government) are planned for 2015-17 affording some estimated 20 additional studios; a partnership with Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is informing the additional designs, with plans to accommodate classes by faculty as well as by resident artists.  These renovations will create dedicated classroom/conference spaces, additional kinds of spaces for iron work and sculpture, pottery, performance arts, an open ‘Market’ space for various market-type events, and finally, a café off the pleasant greenway adjoining the buildings, to serve the surrounding community. \n\n\nWorking tagline: \n\n\nClearWater Artist Studios: Where artists find community, and the Community discovers art!"
