- **Event Description**: Join us on Friday, April 3, as Jazz Sanctuary presents Mary Magdalene - The Jazz of Vigil, a contemplative and deeply moving service inspired by biblical readings and the liturgical vision of Cynthia Bourgeault’s The Meaning of Mary Magdalene. The service will take place in the chapel at 79 Clinton Street (enter through the main church doors; the chapel entrance is immediately on your left).

Rooted in insights from early Christian texts discovered near Qumran in the mid-twentieth century, this unique service reflects on the rich diversity of early Christianity and the re-emergence of Mary Magdalene as a central spiritual figure. In these early traditions, she is portrayed as an enlightened disciple — a teacher, witness, and companion — whose faithful vigil from Good Friday through Easter morning leads to her profound encounter with the risen Christ.

Music for the evening will feature jazz standard ballads of love and longing, offered by vocalists and pastors Emilia Halstead and Renee Rouse, accompanied by Joey Placenti (saxes and flute) and Tim Wildman (keyboard). Through the expressive language of jazz, this service gives voice to both the sorrow of Good Friday and the enduring love that leads to Easter’s promise.

There will be no Jazz Sanctuary service on the third Sunday this month (April 19).
