He grew up in the Seversville Community of West Charlotte. An alumnus of Charlotte public schools, he attended Bruns Avenue Elementary School, Quail Hollow Junior High School and is a graduate of South Mecklenburg High School, class of 1987. He graduated from Rutledge Business College with a degree in Business Administration. Darrell grew up in a working class family and is the youngest of eight siblings. His parents worked hard to maintain a decent quality of life and education for their children. Today, he demonstrates those innate values as a committed member of Little Rock AME Zion Church where he serves on the Board of Directors of the Little Rock Community Development Corporation. Professionally, he is a licensed Life Insurance and Annuities Broker. As a retired Army Veteran, he now serves as the Division 4 Commander, overseeing 18 counties, as a member of The American Legion Department of North Carolina. The American Legion is the largest veterans organization in the world with over 1.5 million members. Also, he is the Past President of the Dilworth South Charlotte Rotary Club (2023-2024) which is a branch of one of the oldest and largest nonprofit service organizations in the world registering over 1.5 million members. As a result of the 9/11 attacks on American soil, Darrell was activated for a 2 year deployment on October 1, 2003 for Operation Iraqi Freedom.He has been prominent in working to make the city of Charlotte a better community for all. In 2020, Darrell completed his 3 year term as President of Los Bravos, Inc., a nonprofit organization that has donated more than $200,000.00 into the Mecklenburg County communities helping deserving African American youth get into college as well as financially supporting other nonprofit businesses. He served as a member of the Board of Directors, Mecklenburg Council on Aging, where their focus was improving the health and independence of older Charlotteans. Darrell was appointed by the Charlotte City Council to the Mecklenburg County, Quasi-Judicial, Zoning Board of Adjustments. For several years, he helped preserve the safety and welfare of the community by encouraging safe construction and the most appropriate use of land throughout the city. Lastly, he served as a member of the board of directors for Thompsons Child and Family Focus, formerly The Family Center, (2006-2008) where the organization’s mission was on the counseling and treatment of abused and neglected children.He is a true patriot who fully endorses the countries Homeland Security initiatives. Darrell graduated from Ft. Leonard Wood US Army School of Engineering in 1991 and Ft. Sam Houston Texas Military Medical School in 1999. As a non-commissioned officer, he deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom (October 2003 to March 2005). He was hand-picked by his commander to serve as the Senior Rear Detachment Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of all military personnel and family matters of soldiers deployed into the Iraqi War, managing the daily financial and training operations of a $5 million dollar military installation. Today, he is a fully retired disabled North Carolina Army National Guard Veteran using his free time to continue volunteering his service in the Charlotte communities.As a student of politics, he studied at the Mecklenburg County Focus on Leadership Institute, graduatingin June 2000 and the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, graduating in December 2000.
