Workshop Abstract

From Forgotten to Remembered: Reviving the Korean War in the Classroom – Expanding Historical Understanding Through Memorials, Memory, and Exchange

The Korean War is often referred to as America’s “Forgotten War,” but its legacy continues to shape global politics, democracy, and civic memory. This interactive one-day workshop equips middle and high school teachers with strategies and resources to bring the Korean War vividly to life in their classrooms. Using the Korean War Legacy Foundation’s extensive oral histories, inquiry-based lessons, and digital archives, participants will explore how historical memory and commemoration influence our understanding of conflict and sacrifice.

Through hands-on activities, teachers will analyze war memorials in Washington, D.C., and Seoul, examine veterans’ personal narratives, and create standards-aligned lessons that integrate history, ELA, art, and civics. Participants will also develop Silent Hero projects to help students connect local stories to global history.
