- **Event Description**: Get ready to meet your favorite writers up close and personal at The Author Next Door, where literature comes to life!About this EventYou may be aware that a famous writer like Michael Chabon grew up in Longfellow and that the best-selling novelist Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie spends half the year in Columbia, but do you know about the surprising number of local authors working in our community?The U.S. publishing ecosystem is a vast pyramid, with thousands of serious writers striving to have their work published every year. Howard County’s literary magazine, the Little Patuxent Review, is a vital part of that system.The Little Patuxent Review will sponsor an evening in which we’ll interview four authors who live in Columbia. They will talk about their work, their methods of publishing, and their ambitions.MEET THE AUTHORS:Sarah Berger -- Editor of The Little Patuxent ReviewSarah Berger is a soprano and writer whose work bridges music and literature. As a vocalist, she has performed extensively with ensembles including the Baltimore Choral Arts Society and Handel Choir of Baltimore, appearing in repertoire from early music to contemporary works and performing internationally.In addition to her musical career, Berger is an accomplished fiction writer. She earned an MFA in Creative Writing and Publishing Arts from the University of Baltimore and holds a background in musicology and English literature from Oberlin College. She continues to balance performing with writing, exploring storytelling across both musical and literary forms.--Sally Rosen Kindred -- PoetSally Rosen Kindred's latest book of poems is , winner of the 2020 Diode Editions Book Prize (Diode Editions, 2021) and the Jacar Press 2021 Julie Suk Award. Her previous books are Book of Asters (2014) and No Eden (2011), both from Mayapple Press.Her chapbooks include Garnet Lanterns (Anabiosis Press, 2006) and Darling Hands, Darling Tongue (Hyacinth Girl Press, 2013) and  (Porkbelly Press, 2018). She has received two Individual Artist Awards from the Maryland State Arts Council, and has been a Fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts (2010, 2011, and 2019) and the inaugural Yetzirah Conference (2023). Poems have appeared in The Alaska Quarterly Review, The New Ohio Review, The Greensboro Review, Poetry Northwest, Missouri Review's Poem-of-the-week Web Feature, and Kenyon Review Online. She is a teaching artist for The Poetry Barn, conducting online poetry workshops. A native of North Carolina, she lives in Maryland.--Karen Outen -- NovelistKaren Outen’s fiction has appeared in Glimmer Train, The North American Review, Essence, and elsewhere. She is a 2018 recipient of the Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers Award and has been a fellow at both the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan and the Pew Fellowships in the Arts.
