TCB: The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing
A film by Louis Massiah and Monica Henriquez

June 20 | 7:30PM | 105 min

Toni Cade Bambara was many things: a writer, a documentary filmmaker, cultural worker, and a warrior for social justice. Her groundbreaking literary works, including The Black Woman (1970), Gorilla, My Love (1972), and The Salt Eaters (1980), helped define Black Arts and feminist movements through the present day.

On the thirtieth anniversary of her death, noted filmmaker and her good friend Louis Massiah has conjured the great Toni Cade Bambara back to life with the new documentary TCB - The Toni Cade Bambara School of Organizing. A biography of the influential multi-hyphenate, it re-presents Bambara for a whole new generation, employing archival footage and personal testimonies to show how she utilized humor and deep insight to inspire a generation of artists to dedicate themselves to liberation through community empowerment.

The film is also structured as a series of lessons on cultural organizing, gleaned from Bambara's life and shared by her friends, colleagues and students.

TCB features a who’s who of cultural thinkers and warriors (in alphabetical order): Malaika Adero, Shirikiana Aina, Walter Cade, Cheryl Chisholm, Francée Covington, Zeinabu Irene Davis, Manthia Diawara, John Colé Eaton, Nikky Finney, Haile Gerima, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Beverly Guy-Sheftall, Linda Janet Holmes, Alice Lovelace, Acklyn Lynch, Makeba Lavan, Louis Massiah, Toni Morrison, Frances Negrón Muntaner, Conor Tomás Reed, Judy Ridenhour, Susan Ross, Sonia Sanchez, Aishah Shahidah Simmons, Holly Smith, Karma Bene Smith, Clyde Taylor, Eleanor Traylor, Laura Whitehorn
