Join us for a poetry reading with local author Ann-Chadwell-Humphries for her new collection, "My Blind Obsession".
"My Blind Obsession" is a new collection of poetry by award-winning poet Ann-Chadwell Humphries that invites us along a journey in visionary company to the wild Texas hill country of the poet’s youth, the South Carolina midlands of her present, and around the globe. Through the overarching dynamic of vision and sight, Humphries unsparingly looks outward from concerns personal and localized—most pointedly, the distinct experience of the poet’s adult-onset blindness—to larger social and political matters, open-heartedly bringing together near and far. Humphries is one who sees with more than sight.
As a girl in rural Texas, Ann competed in poetry recitation. After retirement, she started to write through community classes. Now she takes graduate poetry classes at the University of South Carolina and online classes through the University of Iowa, University of Pennsylvania and Hadley Institute for the Blind. She reads and writes her work using assistive technology.
Muddy Ford Press selected Ann as the second in their Laureate series and published her first book of poems—Cindi Boiter, publisher; Ed Madden, editor.
Ann was a featured poet in Simple Gifts and will be featured in the 40th anniversary of the James Dickey Review, December 2024, and Coastlines Anthology, January 2025. Ann was a runner up for the Julia Mood Peterkin Poetry Award through South 85 Journal.
