Columbia, SC — South Carolina Ballet is proud to bring back William Starrett’s Nutcracker—a beloved Columbia Family holiday tradition—for the 65th Sapphire Anniversary season at the Koger Center for the Arts. With its sweeping romance, thrilling adventure, and a touch of Southern charm, this timeless ballet is the perfect holiday outing for families and couples alike.
This year, we’re thrilled to announce that live music will accompany all evening performances at the Koger Center, featuring the SC Ballet Orchestra conducted by Scott Weiss. Experience the magic of Tchaikovsky’s iconic score performed live—bringing even more depth, energy, and emotion to this already breathtaking production.
Audiences will also enjoy the breathtaking beauty of our stunning, custom-made backdrops. These richly detailed scenes of snow-draped oaks, grand historic homes, and soft twilight skies evoke a uniquely Southern elegance, adding warmth and charm to every moment of the ballet.
Choreographed by Artistic Director William Starrett, South Carolina Ballet’s Nutcracker is both classical and contemporary—honoring tradition while embracing the vibrancy of today’s audiences. A sweet romantic subplot between Clara’s sister and the Lead Cadet brings added depth and warmth, making this year’s production especially magical for date night.
