Coexistence, Landscapes, and Lessons from Asian Megafauna

by Prof. Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz
6.00 pm | Thursday, 16 July | Jasmine Hall, BMICH

What does the future hold for Sri Lanka's most iconic predator?

The Sri Lankan leopard is one of the country's greatest natural treasures. It is an apex predator, an endemic subspecies found nowhere else on Earth, and a powerful symbol of our wild heritage. Yet as development accelerates and landscapes change, the question is no longer whether leopards can survive inside protected areas—but whether we can secure a future where people and leopards continue to coexist across the island.

Join internationally acclaimed conservation scientist Prof. Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz for an evening that brings together cutting-edge science, global conservation experience, and fresh insights into one of the most important wildlife challenges facing Sri Lanka today.

Drawing on decades of work across Asia with elephants, rhinos and leopards, Prof. Campos-Arceiz will explore what Sri Lanka can learn from the region's successes and failures in conserving large mammals. He will also share emerging findings from the WNPS–LOLC Multiregional Leopard Conservation Project—one of the most comprehensive islandwide studies ever undertaken on Sri Lanka's leopards—revealing new insights into leopard distribution, human-caused threats, public attitudes, and the practical pathways towards coexistence.

This lecture is more than a discussion about leopards. It is a conversation about the future of Sri Lanka's landscapes, our relationship with nature, and the choices we make today that will determine whether future generations inherit a country where wildlife still thrives.

Serving as the prelude to Sri Lanka Leopard Day on 1 August, this promises to be one of the most significant conservation lectures of the year.

Whether you are a conservationist, researcher, student, wildlife enthusiast, policymaker, photographer, tourism professional, or simply someone who cares about Sri Lanka's natural heritage, this is an evening not to miss.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
