“Safeguarding Sri Lanka’s Wetlands in a Changing Socio-Environmental Landscape”
The Wildlife and Nature Protection Society presents a special World Wetlands Month lecture featuring two distinguished Sri Lankan experts. Dr. Priyanie Amerasinghe will explore Sri Lanka’s rich heritage of indigenous knowledge and traditional practices that sustained wetlands for centuries, drawing lessons from ancient hydraulic systems and community-based landscape management.
Prof. Uthpala Jayawardena will examine contemporary challenges to wetlands arising from rapid urbanisation, pollution, invasive species and climate change, and highlight the urgent need for stronger governance, science-based restoration and public engagement.
Together, the presentations bring a unique blend of time-tested wisdom and modern environmental science, demonstrating how wetlands support biodiversity, livelihoods and climate resilience. This timely dialogue will underline why safeguarding wetlands is essential for Sri Lanka’s sustainable future and how society can reconnect with these vital ecosystems.
Lecture is open to all, Entrance Free.
