Patrons are warmly invited to the Colombo Philharmonic Choir’s performance of Haydn’s Nelson Mass (Missa in angustiis, Hob. XXII:11) in association with the Chamber Music Society of Colombo on Sunday, 16 November 2025, 7.00 p.m. at The Church of St Michael & All Angels, Polwatte, Colombo 3.
Composed in 1798, the Missa in angustiis (Mass for Troubled Times) stands among Haydn's six late masses and represents a culmination of his sacred output. Constrained by wartime economies that left the composer with only strings, trumpets, timpani, and organ, Haydn transformed these limitations into dramatic assets, harnessing the military associations of brass and percussion to create urgency and spiritual intensity.
In reflective counterpoise, Alonso Lobo’s Versa est in luctum (SSAATTB), written for the obsequies of Philip II and published in the Liber primus missarum (Madrid, 1602), offers poised late-Renaissance polyphony whose imitative detail and carefully prepared dissonance create an eloquent lament.
The programme will also include a musical interlude by the Chamber Music Society.
