Garage-Rock
Around 1985, after attending a concert in the Netherlands by Swedish 60s revival pioneers The Nomads, guitarist Jan Van den Bergh and singer Rik Tielemans decide to join forces. With Bart Teugels (drums) and Peter 'Willy' Annaert (bass) as a rhythm section, they initially operate under the name The Wyld, mainly playing covers of the Stooges, the Sonics and the Ramones. In 1986, they rename themselves The Spanks. In the years to follow, while further expanding their repertoire with own song material, they set numerous Belgian (and foreign) cafés, clubs and festivals ablaze with their energetic and punky rock'n roll. Nicknamed “The Kings of Belgian Garage” by a British music magazine, a solid fan base is rapidly being developed in Switzerland as well.
From '87 to '91 The Spanks release 3 EPs ("Lucille", "Scream the blues" and "Dogfood"), 1 LP (“Lucky You”), 1 CD ("Get Spanked"), a single (" House of love ”) and several tracks on various compilation albums.
In 1992, guitarist Jan decides to move to Spain, and in so doing, marks the end of The Spanks “as we knew them”. From 1997 onwards, the band gradually picks up the thread again, but the unexpected death of bassist Peter “Willy” and the young-onset dementia of singer Rik make for a long break.
A few reunion gigs showing a slightly changed line-up occur, but finally everything falls back into place at the end of 2022, on the occasion of a tribute to King Koen, key figure of the Belgian garage scene, who had died in 2016. Mike Du Bois, formerly the singer of punk band Sunpower, becomes – without at first fully realizing it himself - frontman and singer of The Spanks, whereas bassist Willy Douterloigne (Failing Fellows, The Pink Flowers, The Japs, The Ones, Sinners) turns out to be the perfect match to complete the new line-up. For the record: the meeting between Willy and the other Spanks takes place during a concert by, no kidding, The Nomads! Talking about a common thread! Conclusion: all’s well that ends well!
The Garbage Gang is a threesome based in Antwerp, Belgium, that has been part of the Belgian garage-rockscene since the mid-eighties. As one of the sole survivors of the genre, the band gradually opened up to other musical styles such as punk and loud guitarrock. A solid sound is essential: the basic and no-nonsensical drums/bass/guitar line-up immediately takes you to the core of the songs that are supported by melodic backing vocals.
