- **Event Description**: Feminist Bird Club DMV and Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education are joining forces to bring you something new for Earth Day!About this EventShort description:Happy Spring, Ya’ll! Feminist Bird Club DMV and Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education are joining forces to bring you something special. In honor of Earth Day, let's share the joy of birding with a new generation. You're invited to bring a kid birding! All are welcome, whether you bring along your own kid, your friend's kid, a niece or nephew, or even the neighbor kid from down the street!Meeting Location:We will be meeting at at the north end of the Lake Artemesia Natural Area, 8200 55th Ave, College Park, MD 20740.We've also created a map which you can see farther down the page or view on Google Earth.Getting there:If you are taking the metro, Google Maps estimates it is a 30 minute walk. When you reach the paved leading to the park, it is a 12-ft wide paved asphalt path which is mostly flat with a decline to go under the tracks of 6.6 degrees. Immediately under the tracks, there are small wooden ramps with a 9.2 degree leading up to and down from a flat surface with metal planks.Take the Greenbelt direction on the Green Line to College Park-U of MD Metrorail Station. From there, head west along Calvert Road.Turn right onto Rhode Island AvenueTake a slight right onto the Anacostia Tributary Trail System TrailTurn right onto Paint Branch TrailTurn right at the next fork to stay on the Paint Branch Trail.Head under the train and metro tracks to enter the park.At the fork, take the left fork. You'll continue straight past the Lake on the right and the playground until you arrive at the north entrance. If you are biking, we recommend using Google Maps to use the Metropolitan Branch Trail + Anacostia Tributary Trail System or the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail + Anacostia Tributary Trail System. If you are driving, park in the parking lot called "Parking for Lake Artemesia" on Google Maps . From here, take the paved path along 55th Avenue to Lake Artemesia's Natural Area's main entrance. When you get to the lake, we will be right inside the entrance. We've created a map to help see how to get there, which we have taken screenshots of and included below this event description, and is available to view on Google Earth.Carpooling:We may be able to coordinate carpooling depending on where folks need to be picked up/dropped off. When you register, please let us know whether you need a ride.Trail Information:Important note - Lake Artemesia is a peaceful spot, but can be very popular in good weather. Also, noise from the metro and train that run immediately next to the park can be quite loud from time to time.We will be moving at a leisurely pace and taking breaks along a mostly flat trail that is about 10-12 ft wide. The trail is mostly asphalt, with some concrete parts, with a painted dotted line running down the middle in most places to encourage folks to walk on the right or left depending on which direction they are going. There is an optional metal boardwalk with a small incline for going out on the Lake a little. The path is sunny with little shade so sun protection is encouraged! The total distance we will be traveling is approximately 1.17 miles, and everyone is welcome to stay as long as they want and go as far as they would like.Ranger Bri will lead the group on a search for migrating and local birds at Lake Artemesia, focusing on the north side of the Lake. We will use binoculars to observe wildlife, enjoy fun activities along our hike, and wrap up with a take home project to help birds in our own neighborhoods. The bathrooms are wheelchair accessible and are labeled "women" and "men." Along the first third of the hike, there are not many benches. Once we arrive at the bathrooms, where we will take a bathroom break, the rest of the trail has lots of benches and opportunities to relax and take some time alone if desired. To view the trail in more detail, see the map below or view on Google Earth.Outing Leaders:For this trip, Ranger Bri (she/her) will be the main outing leader. Feminist Bird Club leadership team members Colleen Normile (she/her) and Sarah Werner (she/her) will be there to support as well.Ranger Bri is the founder of Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education and is a passionate environmental educator with over 10 years of experience as a park ranger on federal public lands. Learn more about Deeply Rooted Outdoor Education.Point of Contact:If you need to get in contact with us day-of, please email fbc.dmv@gmail.com or text/call the cell phone number we will share in an email later to those who register.Code of Conduct:Please read the FBC DMV Code of Conduct prior to the event if you haven't already. This Code of Conduct is meant to explicitly place our principles into practice, lay out what behavior is and is not acceptable from our members, participants, and our leaders, and detail how we will work to enforce those principles.Liability Waiver:Ranger Bri will provide waivers to sign day-of the event.Other Important Info:Bring and drink water during the outing to stay hydrated, consider wearing sunscreen, and check the weather to make sure you have enough layers to stay warm. There is little shade on the path, so sun protection is recommended.Binoculars and bird identification books are not necessary, but you are welcome to bring them! We'll have many pairs of binoculars to lend out and a couple bird ID books/apps to share for figuring out what birds we see and/or hear.Masks are not required, but we ask everyone to physically distance and to wear a mask if they need or want toIf you have any questions, have any accessibility needs, or have any other thoughts, please reach out to us. We truly want to hear from you and want everyone to be able to feel bird joy to the fullest ? https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events4/banners/c6b5df20-1f09-11f0-be75-f9818eae8902-rimg-w782-h740-dc173136-gmir.jpg A zoomed-out view of where we are meeting (pink pin), the path we will take (yellow line), where the Bathroom is (smaller gray pin), how to get to the meeting location from the metro (blue), and how to get to the meeting location from either car parking lot (orange). We will be meeting at at the north end of the Lake Artemesia Natural Area.Image description: A satellite image with the trails and pins to visualize the information in the event description. https://cdn-az.allevents.in/events9/banners/c9c06000-1f09-11f0-808c-b54e8032c09f-rimg-w686-h740-dc163135-gmir.jpg A zoomed-in screenshot of the trail we will be taking in yellow, with the meeting location in the top as a pink pin, and the bathroom as a smaller gray pin in the middle.
